My kids have agreed to allow me to keep Ian on Fridays. My initial thought was that if I could get into a rhythm or pattern in spending time with him, that someday I may have built a relationship with him that might allow me to speak into his life about the things of God. HA!
As usual, and with no complaints I share with you...that it is Ian on these Fridays that is speaking into MY life about the things of God! I bet many of you are not surprised. :)
Last Friday we had a glorious day!! We read an Eric Carle book about animals, and a Bible story about a lady at a well. We tired ourselves out with all of that so we napped together on the big king sized bed with Caroline the Cat and Mercy the Dog until 1pm! It was a good sleep too!
When we woke up, I thought we might try to tackle the task of the day. Groceries!! Now Ian is still a little guy and he cannot sit up on his own strength in the carriage, so this caused me to have to set him up IN the cart. He loved wheeling around, taking the corners fast like a race car. I really felt like we were the only ones in all of Walmart as we giggled and raced up and down the aisles.
Eventually we tackled the beginning of the list....we didn't have much room in the cart left (lol) so we piled the groceries around Ian until it looked like he would dissapear. At that point we went through the register...paid for what we had and brought it to the car.
While at the car we grabbed a bottle and diapers and headed back into the air conditioning (104 heat on that day) and stopped in the Walmart's McDonalds. Ian had a fresh diaper change, and a snack and we were off again. We started putting items in the cart and the poor little thing spit up. No worries, we wheeled over to the baby clothes aisle, picked us out a little "onesie" changed him up and started again.
At that point my dear friend Ellen called. I wanted to talk with her but had no confidence in my ability to juggle the list, the items and Ian. Sooooo for about 45 minutes to an hour I just wheeled around the store in the air conditioning taking a break from my "task" and Ian grabbed a quick snooze.
When he woke up, I hung up - we grabbed the dairy and Grand Pop met us at the store on his way home to help us carry everything in. It was an amazing little blip in time but I will never forget it. It was so freeing to have no agenda but the sweet baby. It was amazing to not to care what people might think if he cried, or was dirty, OR if I appeared completely crazy giggling and running thru the store. It was unprescedented for me to be divorced from the clock. Ian and I were in Walmart all told from 1:45 until 5:30pm. 4 + hours, and I never finished the whole grocery list.
Ian is teaching me about priorities. He is showing me what an uptight mother I was (Sooooooooooo sorry Scott) and what is really important...we started the day quietly and with Jesus in a Bible Story....we ate were rested and then spent the rest of the day simply enjoying each others company. AND we got ice cream! (and I gave him some too!)
We covered all the important bases. It was a great day.
